Crafting Your Wedding Speech

Crafting Your Wedding Speech

You’ve been asked to stand up and give a speech at the wedding! Your head begins to spin and sweat develops on your brow. What will you talk about? Why are you drawing a blank about everything you knew about the couple? You begin to feel like there’s no way you’ll be able to do this. Don’t panic! We’ve got you covered. We’ve compiled some tips to help you from the moment you are asked all the way until you are delivering your speech to the guests and the happily wedded couple.

Prepare

It is not a good idea to wing it when you are giving a wedding speech. As soon as you know that you are going to be standing up and toasting the couple, take a few minutes to sketch out funny memories that you have, important moments that you remember, and anything else in the beginning just to get an idea about various topics that you can talk about. You could take a minute, if you know both of them, to write out stories about each of them individually before remembering times that you’ve shared with them together. Also, you can sketch out some ideas, put the paper down, and come back to it later to see if you’ve remembered anything else or more details for what you’ve already thought of.

Introduce Yourself

Not everyone at the wedding may know who you are or how you know the happy couple. Take some time to let everyone know how you know the couple and who you are to them. This part of the speech does not need to be very long, but as you are telling personal stories about the couple, the guests can understand the context of the story, when they understand how you know them, to see the humor better and feel like they know you better as well.

Add Humor

When you are telling stories, if you have an appropriately funny anecdote, you can share it, but keep in mind the audience and the privacy wishes of the couple. Sometimes a story can be hilarious but inappropriate. When in doubt, you can always ask the couple about the various stories you wanted to share and see if they have any problems with them. Another thing you can do is to check in with the couple and see if any topics are off limits. It will change the mood of the day if you share something that was supposed to be private. You never know who else knows or doesn’t know about some of the things the couple has done.

Talking Points

To keep yourself on track when you are saying your speech, it is good to have a clear beginning, middle, and end. You want to make sure that you say what you want to say and keep the rambling to a minimum. You can do this by having a card with talking points that you hold,  if you don’t want to have the entire word-for-word speech in front of you. Having a card allows you to talk and casually look down to make sure you are staying on track.

Thanks

As part of your speech, make sure that you take the time to thank everyone who helped make the day perfect for the couple. These people can include the host venue, the staff, special vendors, guests who took the time out of their busy days to celebrate the couple, and any guests who traveled a long distance to make sure they were part of the couple’s day.

Time and Pace

If you are not used to talking in front of a lot of people, you can keep your speech relatively short and simple. You should practice saying your speech out loud a few times to make sure that you sound relaxed. You can write the best speech of your life, but if you hurry through it when you are talking the guests might become confused or uncomfortable. One thing to focus on is that the day is not about you. You are there to celebrate the couple, so focus on the couple. Talk like you’re having a conversation with just them. This can help you to relax and slow your pace if you just focus on them.

Writing a wedding speech doesn’t have to be a nerve-wracking experience. Start early, practice, and focus on the couple and you’ll do great!
